Ladies rugby has been included in the Great-Rift-Ten-Aside that kicks off this morning at Nakuru Athletic Club.

Three teams have confirmed participation. They are Mwamba RFC, Cats and Shiners Girls High School. They will play on a round robin basis.

Secondary schools will also participate for the first time in a parallel league called Junior Challenge Cup.

The ten schools from Rift Valley Province include top seeds Koelel, Menengai, Nakuru Day, Moi Secondary and Upper Hill High Schools, all in Pool A. Pool B has Nakuru High, Njoro Boys, St Christopher, Jomo Kenyatta and Langalanga.

Meanwhile, defending champions Impala RFC are the top seeds in the Main Cup.

Impala has been grouped together with Mean Machine, Bungoma RFC and Kenya Polytechnic University in Pool A.

Hosts Nakuru RFC are seeded in Pool D alongside Kenya Harlequins, Daystar and KCA Universities while Pool B has Mwamba, Nondies, Eldoret Exiles and Nazarene University.

Kenya Commercial Bank, Strathmore University, Makerere Impis and Kisumu RFC are in Pool C.

Zain and Rhino Energy Drink jointly sponsor the tournament to the tune of over Sh500,000.

Yesterday, Nakuru Town MP Lee Kinyanjui called on the town residents to turn up in large numbers to cheer the teams.

Kinyanjui said the best way to market Kenya today is through rugby following an excellent performance by the national Sevens Team.

Rhino Energy Drinks Managing Director Joseph Muya said they are out to develop rugby in schools .

He said his company is also ready to help unearth talented players in the region.
