Mathare, AFC Leopards seek redemption in midweek FKF-PL matches
FOOTBALL By Washington Onyango | July 20th 2021
Mathare United will be seeking to get out of the bottom table standings when they host league leaders Tusker at Ruaraka Grounds in one of the three Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) midweek matches lined up to be played today (Tuesday).
The Slum Boys have been registering mixed reactions from their last five fixtures where they have lost three and won two matches.
Currently, at the bottom of the log with 14 points, victory over Tusker will see Mathare momentarily leapfrog second-last placed Vihiga United who play tomorrow (Wednesday).
On the other hand, leaders Tusker have a chance to go nine points clear at the helm of the standings if they defeat Mathare United.
Despite being without Henry Meja and Boniface Muchiri (Representing the country with the Kenya Under-23 side at the ongoing Cecafa Championships in Ethiopia), Tusker will be banking on the return of captain Hashim Sempala to propel them to their 17th win of the season.
The trio together with Kevin Okoth, Christopher Oruchum and Luke Namanda were not in action last Friday when the brewers beat Ingwe 2-0 at Thika Stadium.
Sempala will be available for selection in this clash, having completed his one-match suspension, which resulted from five successive yellow cards.
At the same time, AFC Leopards will be out to bounce back to winning ways against relegation candidates Western Stima at the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Showground in Nakuru.
In the other round 26 match, Bidco United and Bandari FC will face off at Thika Stadium in Kiambu.
Bandari are seventh with 36 points from 24 matches, while newcomers Bidco are 11 on 31 points from the same number of matches.
Leopards, who are third with 43 points from 24 matches, will have to cope with the absence of several key players who include defender Lewis Badi as well as midfielders Austine Odhiambo and Marvin Omondi.
Stima have not registered victory in their last four matches which leaves them 15th with 18 points from 25 matches.
