Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes has sent an honest message to teammates and fans after the 3-2 shock elimination by RB Leipzig from the UEFA Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

Man United, who won the reverse fixture 5-0 in October, just needed a point to secure progression from Group H and move into the last 16 of the most competitive club football competition.

“Not good enough from us!

“We have to do much better to represent such a big club and especially playing in the Champions League with big teams,” the attacking midfielder posted on his official Instagram account on Thursday.

The Red Devils were surprisingly 3-0 down after 69 minutes but almost staged a miraculous comeback at Red Bull Arena, instigated by Fernandes scoring his 11th goal of the season with a nerveless finish from the penalty spot.

Fernandes’ corner kick then led to substitute and embattled Paul Pogba heading in a second goal, courtesy of an Ibrahima Konate deflection, yet the turnaround was, disappointingly, a step too far for the Reds.

The Red Devils United will now face their bitter rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Leipzig, who can look forward to Monday's last-16 draw in Nyon, face Werder Bremen on their return to Bundesliga action on Saturday.

The draw for the Europa League knockout stages will also take place in Switzerland on Monday.

Confirmed clubs in Monday’s draw so far

AC Milan, Ajax, Antwerp, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Benfica, Braga, Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb, Dynamo Kiev, Granada, Hoffenheim, Krasnodar, Leicester City, Lille, Olympiacos, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers, RB Salzburg, Red Star Belgrade, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Slavia Prague, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Villarreal.
