Kawiru FC from Igembe Central are the winners of this year’s Governor’s Cup football tournament.
Despite drawing 2-2 with Keeria FC from Imenti South in the final at the weekend, they still walked away with the Sh800,000 prize money after topping the league.
It was the culmination of a journey that saw more than 180 teams from nine sub-counties take part in the championships in Meru.
Vincent Muthee opened the scores for Kawiru before Alex Murimi added the second. Keeria scored through Frank Murimi and Walter Ogeti.
Keeria received Sh300,000 from the tournament’s sponsor, Meru Governor Peter Munya. Football Kenya Federation Secretary (Upper Eastern) Ken Rungu told the teams to invest wisely for a better tomorrow.
Kiria FC (Imenti Central), Kisima FC (Buuri), Gachanka (North Imenti), and Etama Tigers (Igembe North) are some of the teams that received Sh300,000 for topping in their sub-counties.
Ngaya (Igembe Central) were awarded Sh200,000, as were Naari, Desert Warriors, and Kiamuri.
Rungu said the tournament had not only kept the youth positively engaged, it had also helped them to earn money to start income-generating activities.
Munya, who was accompanied by CECs Joy Muriungi (Sports), Newton Itobi (Infrastructure), and Party of National Unity’s Senate candidate Mugambi Imanyara, said he had more opportunities in store for the youth.
“We built Kinoru Stadium to international standards, which gives the youth a chance to hone their potential,” he said.
