Former international Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno is back at Gor Mahia as an assistant coach replacing Tom Ogweno who has since joined Nairobi City Stars.

Otieno began work at the former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions on Tuesday, according to head coach Jose Marcelo.

“He has come back to help us and we are glad to have him back. He has a lot of experience and we expect to have a good working relationship with him,” said Marcelo.

The former international defender was initially head coach at Posta Rangers before being elevated to the position of Technical Director.

In 2011 while in-charge at Gor Mahia, he helped the club finish in second position on the log.

Apart from Gor Mahia, he has also handled Sony Sugar and Chemelil Sugar as well as the national team Harambee Stars.

At the same time, Marcelo has expressed his frustrations at the lack of a training ground for the team even as reports emerged that the club had been locked out of Camp Toyoyo stadium.

The Brazillian said the situation is frustrating for both the players and members of the technical bench as it is hampering their work.

“A club like Gor Mahia cannot be run this way.

It is unprofessional. On Monday, the management of Camp Toyoyo closed the gate in front of us when it was our turn to train.

It is not good at all and affects not only the morale of the players, but the technical bench as well,” he said.

He further revealed that he was not sure where the club would train on Wednesday as the office had not informed him of any plans.

“We are here to work and to win trophies for the club but such interruptions interfere with our plans.” The coach also called for patience from fans in the wake of not so good results in friendly matches the team has been involved in.

“Those are just friendly matches and there was nothing at stake.

"We used these matches to try out new players and tactics and so the fans have to bear with us as we work on building the most formidable squad for the new season,” added the coach.
