Phil Jones isn't clever enough to play centre-back for Manchester United or England

Paul Scholes doesn't believe his former Manchester United teammate Phil Jones is clever enough to play in the centre of defence for club or country.

The English defender was deployed at right-back for the Three Lions' clash with Ireland in Dublin and Scholes reckons that position suits him better.

Jones signed for United in 2011 and was tipped by many to become one of the club's first-choice centre-backs.

However, after four years at Old Trafford, the 23-year-old still finds himself in and out of the team, and Scholes has raised more questions about his footballing intelligence.

Speaking to ITV prior to England's game with Ireland, Scholes said: "I just think at centre back, when he is playing against clever forwards, he tends to get dragged out of position quite easily.

"At right-back you still need to be clever positionally but I think he can use his pace and power and he hasn't got a bad delivery either.

"I just think at centre half he is not quite clever enough to do it."

Former England right-back Lee Dixon was surprised to see Jones get the nod out wide over Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne.

"I'm still not sure about him, I'm really not," Dixon said. "I think it would have been better to give Clyne a game today."
