A big field of around 160 golfers will converge at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club tomorrow for the 2014 Standard County Golf tournament that tees off from 7.20am.

Standard Media Group are the main sponsors in the 18-hole stableford tournament that has attracted golfers from the home club, Mombasa, Leisure, Vipingo and Malindi, besides staff and guests of the sponsors.

Event co-ordinator John Ngaruiya said the event being played around the country, has so far been staged at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Limuru, Kakamega, Thika, Nyanza, Nyeri and Eldoret.

Several golfers including veteran lady golfers are expected to sharpen their golf sticks for the event expected to be challenging at the
champion course that offers testing short, rough and numerous doglegs.

It will be difficult to predict the winners not until the 19th green, judging by the number of improved golfers and juniors registered to play.

This is even after factoring the absence of last year’s overall winner Jaiman Patel, men’s winner Steve Davidson, Best Junior Sanjeev Dhutia and the Lady winner late Diana Munyao who died last July.

Standard Commercial Manager Salim Bwika, who will be defending the staff title which he won with a score of 36 points last year, stands a good chance of retaining the title because he is used to the Coastal heat, which is scorching at the moment.

The club’s greenkeeper Ben Muriithi said the course has been well prepared and the greens and fairways are in excellent condition to
play. Club captain Sammy Kamau, said: “We are happy to have The Standard Group in Nyali and are ready and willing to host them and their guests. We are certain they will enjoy their stay and golf in our club. We expect a full house as you can see the draw is about full.”

Kamau said the players will have to manage hole no. 16, a challenging par 4, stroke index 4 because its long and plays into the wind.

“On the first nine, hole no 2, par 4 stroke index 3 will be hard for golfers, despite playing into the wind, it's a very long par 4 which plays like a par 5, and has a dog leg left and bushes on both sides which makes it a real championship hole as birdies and par on this hole are rare. In fact, most lucky players get bogie and double bogie or end up scratching the hole,” he said.

Among the veteran ladies to watch are Joyce Lanxe, Fatma Mohamed, Susan Stokes, Teresia Odoo and the Club Chairman Christine Ocktoch, who are in good form and have been playing well of late.

The men’s players to watch are Joseph Oluoch, Charles Odoo, Kibe Ngunje, Walter Starzock, Aamin Dhanji, among others and T. Jensz, who was last year’s guest winner.

Staff members will be led by Salim Bwika and the South Rift Commercial team leader Joseph Yego.

Standard Group’s Corporate Affairs Manager Wanja Mwangi said the Classic County golf series being played around the country will give an opportunity for the Group to interact with their clients in all the regions.
