The current Gor Mahia officials will continue to serve in office until new elections are held on January 30.

This is the verdict of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) regarding the aborted elections, which failed to take off on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium following a spate of violence.

The federation’s chairman Sam Nyamweya said they  will not allow a power vacuum at the current  Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions.

“Gor Mahia is a major club and have a busy schedule next year.  We cannot allow there to be a vacuum in the club and therefore call that  for now the status quo remains.

“After consultations with government and Fifa, we have decided to give them until January 30 to hold elections under the supervision of an independent electoral board. We also want to warn everyone who may try to disrupt the process that stern action will be taken against him or her,” said Nyamweya.

The elections were disrupted after rival factions failed to agree on modalities of carrying out the exercise leading to violence and distraction of voting materials.

Senior Deputy Commissioner of Sports Jacktone Indakwa was forced to call off the exercise after several attempts when the whole process turned chaotic.

Police were forced to fire tear gas canisters to disperse the rowdy crowd, which had resisted efforts to be orderly for the process to continue.

Some members and aspirants  complained that even though they had paid membership fee, their names were missing from the register.

Trouble started as soon as the meeting was called to order as several members raised questions about the financial accounts and the fate of some key players.

Speaking before elections kicked off,  club chairman Ambrose Rachier (pictured right) told members they had met most of their goals in the just concluded season.

“We wanted to win the KPL and we did. We were also able to get sponsorship for the club enabling us to pay our players better. Looking forward, we must now focus on building a new stadium for the team as well as improve the welfare of our players,” he said.

Rachier is facing strong opposition from Eric Adede, who wants to be the chairman. Gor will feature in next year’s CAF champions league tournament after winning the 2013 KPL title.
