Sofapaka and Gor Mahia eye FKF Cup glory to save face

By Gilbert Wandera

Gor Mahia and Sofapaka will be seeking to atone their failed bid to clinch the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) by winning Tuesday’s final of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup.

The match will be played at Nyayo National Stadium and kicks off at 7pm. Fans can also catch it live on SuperSport.

Gor edged out rivals AFC Leopards 2-1 while Sofapaka beat Tusker 1-0 in a controversial semi-final played on Sunday.

Tuesday’s final is a repeat of last year’s edition in which Gor Mahia won at City Stadium. Both sides are desperate for an opportunity to represent the country at the continental stage something that will play out in today’s fixture.

Gor Mahia with in one trophy already in the cabinet (KPL Top Eight) are a more hungry side for success after missing out on the league title.

The country’s most successful club needed to beat Thika United two weeks ago to be crowned league champions but only managed a draw.

Impressive show

Despite the major disappointment of missing out on the league title, Gor still put up an impressive performance to silence Leopards on Saturday a pointer that they have overcome the last day failure and are ready to move on.

“We have put the failure behind us and are looking forward to win the Cup competition. Our players are professionals and understand there is nothing we can do over it but to look ahead,” said Gor Mahia coach Zradvko Logarusic.

Gor will be hoping that top scorer Dan Ssrenkuma is fit for today’s match having been carried off the pitch in their last match against Leopards on Saturday.

Automatic selection

The Ugandan has scored 17 goals for Gor this season making him an automatics choice upfront. His partnership with Rama Salim has been lethal this season. Sofapaka must watch the duo closely.

It is two years since Sofapaka last won a trophy and today’s fixture gives them an opportunity to turn around what has been one of their worst seasons since 2009 when they won the KPL title.

The club has so far seen the departure of two coaches Salim Ali (fired) and Stewart Hall, who opted to return back to his former club Azam of Tanzania.Despite their below par performance in the league, Sofapaka have the men to do the job for them.

Veteran John Barasa, the league’s top scorer is always lethal upfront and will carry the responsibility to score goals for his side. Humphrey Mieno and Joseph Nyaga are the other key players.

The winner of the match will qualify for the Confederations Cup competition as Kenya’s second club in the continental arena.

Tusker has already earned the right to play in the CAF Champions League competition after they retained the KPL title.
