Harambee Stars fail to sparkle against SA

By Gilbert Wandera

Henri Michel’s first match for Harambee Stars ended in a 2-1 defeat to South Africa Tuesday night while Bafana Bafana recorded their first away win under coach Gordon Igesund.

A first-half goal from Tokelo Rantie put Bafana Bafana ahead, before they were pegged back with just under 20 minutes to play by a penalty from Harambee Stars skipper Dennis Oliech.

However, an own goal from Stars left-back Christopher Wekesa soon after was enough for the visitors to claim victory at the Nyayo National Stadium which was good news after a disappointing performance in the 1-0 loss to Poland last weekend.

Both goals by the visitors were due to defensive errors. First Rantie got to the end of a defence splitting pass to beat Arnold Origi with a near post shot in the 17th minute and then Wekesa scored an own goal in the 75th minute in an attempt to clear a dangerous ball.

Western Stima forward Wesley Kemboi playing his first game seemed to have overcome the stage fright with an impressive performance playing alongside Oliech and the penalty came off Kemboi’s header. The visitor’s were dangerous in the midfield where they dominated.

Coach Igesund made three changes to the starting XI that he fielded against Poland on Friday night, with Wayne Sandilands, Thabo Nthethe and Tokelo Rantie coming into the side in place of Itumeleng Khune, Luvhengo Mungomeni and Sifiso Myeni.

Bafana created early chances for Siphiwe Tshabalala and Rantie in the 10th and 13th minutes, though neither player was able to hit the target and trouble Kenyan goalkeeper Origi.

Meanwhile, Kenyan Premier League (KPL) action resumes this weekend after a one-week break and it will herald another battle for the title and escape from relegation.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Secretary General Lodvick Aduda confirmed yesterday that the Football Kenya Federation Cup matches, which were supposed to be held this weekend have been postponed.

All the top three teams Tusker, Gor Mahia, and AFC Leopards will be in action attempting to consolidate their positions well aware that any slip-up will cost them dearly. Defending champions and leaders Tusker will take on Muhoroni Youth at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Saturday in a match they are tipped to win.

The brewers have over the last four weeks proven that they are worthy champions in waiting with successive wins after some trying moments, which saw former coach Sammy Omollo shown the door.

With four matches to go before the end of the season, it is an equally important match for Muhoroni who must also win to be sure of their status in the top league next season.

Muhoroni will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways.
