Thika United, Karuturi Sports post poor performance

By Gilbert Wandera

Thika United have built a reputation as one of the most youthful sides in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) since earning promotion to the top league seven years ago.

However, the team has always suffered from inability to maintain their top players and as a result; they have never been top contenders for the title despite a massive investment from sponsors Brookside Diaries.

This season has not been different either. After an impressive performance in the first leg, United’s performance is back to the normal script associated with the second leg.

In two matches, the Thika side has conceded nine goals after going down 4-1 to Sofapaka and 5-0 to AFC Leopards on Sunday.

But stand in coach James Omondi insists theirs is still a learning process and they will soon recover from the embarrassing results.

“We have a young squad and an equally youthful technical bench who still have a long way to go and we strive to draw lessons from such bad results. It is a learning process for us,” he said.

Omondi admitted that they have to learn to hold onto their veteran players if they hope to maintain a good long season performance.

“Despite the two massive losses, we can still finish among the top three teams at the end of the season as coaches; we are working on ways to motivate the players to put these bad results behind them. There is still hope for us to do well and achieve our target,” he told FeverPitch.

While Thika United are grappling with inexperience, Karuturi Sports, another team that has been on the losing end in recent matches, say they are affected by the absence of regular players who are nursing injuries.

Not in danger

Karuturi lost 1-0 to a resurgent Rangers side on Sunday in the latest poor result at home but coach Michael Nam insists they are not in danger of being relegated.

“We have had to come up with a different line-up from the one we used in the first leg after most of our key players sustained injuries. It has left us with very little options when it comes to our selection and sometimes we have to field inexperienced players,” said Nam.

“However, all is not lost. We are still in top ten and have to win just three out of our remaining ten matches to collect a maximum of 35 points that will ensure we survive relegation,” Nam told FeverPitch.

The win by Rangers marks revival by a team that was destined for relegation after a bad start to the season after most of their veteran players left.

Coach James Nandwa has injected self-confidence in the team which now appears to have put behind them the spate of bad results.
