Grief: Kapsabet school mourns old boy, Daniel Moi

Kapsabet Boys High School celebrates Founders’ Day on February 4 every year to commemorate the day the school was established in 1925.

Preparations for the big day were under way when news arrived that one of the school’s alumni, Daniel Moi (pictured), had passed on.

A sombre mood engulfed the institution where Moi was admitted in 1935 – then Government African School (GAS) - and left in 1942. He was index 506. It is at Kapsabet where he nurtured his leadership prowess.

“It is a sad day losing our alumni. Our Founders’ Day that was meant for today (Tuesday) had to be called off. We instead did it low key and held a cleanup exercise in Kapsabet town as part of our community service... we did what retired president would have advocated for,” said Chief Principal Kipchumba Maiyo.

Mr Maiyo (pictured) said the institution’s board of management, parents association, students and the community at large condoles with the family, relatives and friends of the retired president.

School prefect

“As an institution, we feel his contribution in infrastructural development and also patronage of our school. Moi gifted our school the tuition complex that also hosts offices and laboratories. The last time Moi visited the school was in 2011 when he opened the resource centre and library,” said Maiyo.

According to records in African Schools report card kept by respective heads of Kapsabet Boys High school, Moi was the institution’s prefect in 1941 before being elevated to the school captain the following year in 1942.

The former head of state was described by then Principal of Kapsabet Boys Mr A. Walford 1940-1945 in comments in his school leaving certificate as ‘Very promising Character.’

Moi is reported to have been active in football and cross country. The school nurtured Moi and other great leaders in politics as well as those in public and corporate sectors and has maintained supremacy in national examination results every year.
