Mama Sarah: Support women hit by famine

US President Barack Obama’s step grandmother wants the Government to economically support women in rural areas who are hard hit by the on going famine.
Mama Sarah Obama said many donor-funded projects were still out of reach for rural women. She paid a courtesy call on Siaya DC Boaz Cherutich yesterday to brief him on her interest in charity work. She raised several issues affecting widows and orphans throughout the country.
“I want the Government to support women in the villages by empowering them economically,” she said.
She said kitties like the Women Enterprise Fund have not helped the needy woman and the Government should come up with other avenues of funding that are more responsive to women.
She noted that many youth who had left school were unable to secure jobs and had turned to their mothers. The 87-year-old granny said she wants charitable organisations and other donors to come to the aid of the rural woman.
