Heavyweight champion Ajowi knocked out in semi-final bout

National heavyweight champion Elly Ajowi of Kenya Police bowed out in the semi-finals in a split points decision as the fourth leg of the National Boxing League entered the second day at Nanyuki Social Hall last evening.

Ajowi lost to Joshua Wasike of Kibra who won the epic tussle 2-1 to enhance his chances of getting selected into a provisional squad expected to feature in the African Olympic qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal in January.

However, the loss did not come as a surprise to the 38-year-old police officer who early this week told Standard Sports that emerging youngsters were giving experienced boxers a run for their money.

Wasike will this afternoon square it out with Peter Abuti of Kenya Defence Forces in the final.

Cruised into finals

Abuti had dispatched Armstrong Kirinya of Laikipia on unanimous points decision in another heavyweight semi-final match in which both boxers gave a good account of themselves. Fresh from the African Games, Boniface Mogunde of Kenya Police also cruised into the finals of the welterweight after he saw off Kennedy Mutwiri of Meru on points.

In the super heavyweight, Wellington Busili of Kibra also cruised into the finals after he dismissed Duncan Otieno of Busia in a semi-final match.

In the light heavyweight clash, Ishmael Asoka of KDF marched into the finals after unanimous points decision against Samson Odhiambo of Kisumu and will this afternoon face Humphrey ‘Jakababa’ Ochieng of Kenya Police in the finals.

To books ticket to the finals, Ochieng beat Alex Kabeni of Laikipia also on unanimous points decision.
