Pogba's future at Manchester United remains in question

Liverpool and Manchester City should both try to sign Manchester United’s Paul Pogba this summer, according to Darren Bent.

Pogba arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 for a then world record fee of £89million, but has often found himself made a scapegoat when United have disappointed since.

He’s been absent for much of this season due to ankle injuries, and the World Cup winner underwent ankle surgery at the beginning of January.

The Frenchman has featured in just seven Premier League games this season, having been out of action for almost three months between October and December.

The Red Devils have struggled without Pogba, who is currently continuing his rehab in Dubai and are in real danger of missing out on European football next term.

At present they sit seventh in the league, below the likes of Sheffield United, with just 35 points from 25 games.

And Bent feels this proves he’s unfairly maligned by the club’s fans.

He told talkSPORT: “At times you have to feel a bit sorry for him. He’s the scapegoat for absolutely everything [at Manchester United].

“Even when he’s not playing people blame him and they’re always talking about him.

“I don’t think sometimes the social media aspect helps him. When he says he’s ill and then he’s at his brother’s wedding dancing around – evidently that rubs people up the wrong way.

“But when you talk about Manchester United selling him, I think there’s going to be a whole host of teams lining up to get him.

“I know people are saying they’re going to have to take a loss on him, but I can see him going pretty much anywhere he wants – certain teams in the Premier League by the way.”

The ex-Tottenham striker added: “When someone like a Paul Pogba comes available on the market, and let’s not forget he’s only 26, there’s going to be so many takers.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if teams like Manchester City come in for him.

"I can see him getting in Liverpool's team, too.

“If he’s on top, top form he can get in most teams in the world.”

Pogba has been linked with a move away during his time on the sidelines. And Bent feels the time might be right for both parties to separate.

He explained: “Is it a headache that Manchester United are tired of hearing about?

“He’s been injured for the longest period of time, but yet we’re still talking about him.

“Because he’s not even on the pitch and we’re still talking about him, I wonder maybe if it is best if they part their separate ways.

“Then everyone can solely focus on Manchester United football club – rather than looking for a scapegoat, which is Paul Pogba, for everything that has gone wrong in recent years.”
