CECAFA: Kenya renew rivalry with Uganda in Asmara

There will be no love lost when familiar foes Kenya and Uganda lock horns in today’s Cecafa U-15 Challenge Cup final in Asmara, Eritrea.

The 3 pm encounter is set to rekindle a long-time football rivalry between the two neighbouring countries.

While 10-man Kenya edged out Rwanda 4-2 on penalties to sail through after a 1-1 draw in regular time on Wednesday, the Ugandans showed their scoring prowess by demolishing Burundi 6-0 in a one-sided semifinal encounter.

Kenya will have to do without the services of suspended defender Umar Yasin Rajab, who was sent off for a second bookable offence in the semis.

Although there will be a lot at stake, Kenya coach Sagar Lakhani has tried to take the pressure off his players, saying the final is a learning opportunity for the team.

“As a team, we are happy with our achievements so far. Being in the final is a sign of good things we have done, but we have also learned a lot along the way,’’ said Lakhini.

“The boys have gained a lot of experience from the tournament and it has also helped them to grow as young footballers.”

“Winning is good, but we should remember that this is a development team. So, the most important thing at the moment is to learn, grow and become better. In the next few years, we will be ready to represent our national team as athletes of the highest caliber.”

Elsewhere, Kenyan international Joseph Okumu has joined Swedish top tier side IF Elfsborg for a USL Championship-record transfer fee.

The center-half was unveiled on Wednesday in Sweden after completing his move from United States’ Real Monarchs.
