Wanyama to collect British passport, but is he safe at Spurs?

Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama is a few days away from collecting his British passport.

English news outlet Daily Mail reported Wanyama put off a proposed move abroad last year to ensure he qualified for his passport after residing in the United Kingdom for over six years.

This means that should he get the passport, the Tottenham midfielder will hold dual citizenship which is acceptable in Kenya's laws.

But is Wanyama really safe at Tottenham Hotspurs at the moment?

The 28-year-old spent a huge part of last season on the sidelines due to a knee injury. But even after recovery, Wanyama appeared more or less a 'surplus requirement' to the North London club.

Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino preferred playing English midfielders Eric Dier and Harry Winks and benched the Harambee Stars skipper.

The Argentine clearly showed that Wanyama's services were slowly becoming less important for the club as he benched him in crucial matches.

Wanyama, who started on the bench for the most part of Spurs' first half of the season still has two years left in his contract.

The arrival of Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyon adds to Wanyama's woes as he fights for a place in the first eleven.

The 22-year-old French international is one of the most promising midfielders in the world and is anticipated to take the Premier League by storm.

Ndombele made his France debut against Iceland on October 11, 2018, coming off the bench to replace Paul Pogba and aided his team make a stunning comeback to finish the match level.

The Frenchman played a key role for Olympique Lyon last season featuring in 34 Ligue 1 matches, making seven assists and scored one.

"He's thoughtful and intelligent. With the ball, to make the best use of it, he takes in information before anyone else to make the right choice," Olympique Lyon coach Bruno Génésio said last season.

"Without the ball, he brings balance to the team. When Nabil Fekir is out of position, he's there, providing balance, alongside our defensive midfielder Lucas Tousart,"

"He's interesting because he's one of those players capable of solving tactical problems with his game intelligence." He added.

At the age of 22, Ndombele has advanced to a complete midfielder with a calibre ineligible for the sidelines. Therefore, Wanyama will need to fight harder to earn a first-team selection.

Wanyama made three appearances for Kenya at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, before bowing out of the tournament in group stages.
