Kwanthanze High qualified to the Machakos County secondary schools girls’ volleyball final after beating Father Heeran Girls School at Tala Boys High School grounds yesterday.

The reigning national and East Africa champions oozed pure class as they made light work of their opponents. They took the first set 25-2 but Father Heeran Girls made some improvement in the second and third set scoring five and four points to crash out of the championship.

Kwanthanze coach Justine Kigwari said the score was a clear indication that the tie was a mismatch but they were expecting stiff competition at the Eastern region games. “Our opponents did not give us the challenge we expected in a semi-final match but it doesn’t mean that we are too good. We just had to give our best," Kigwari said.

Former national girls Under-19 football champions Archbishop Njenga retained Kakamega County title after trouncing Butere Girls 5-1 in the final. Moi Girls Nangili relinquished their crown after going down 1-4 to Mwira.

In Makueni, Mbooni Boys won boys under-16 football title after thrashing Ngoto 5- 0. Moses Igesha netted a brace while Peter Loshorua, Pesian Paul and John Kibe scored one goal each. Their under-19 team was unlucky as they were forced to surrender their county title after falling 4-5 to Iiani in post-match penalties after a barren draw.

Mbooni coach Dominic Maingi praised his charges having won the title on an unbeaten run. “They played well because winning a championship on an unbeaten run is no mean feat. We want to qualify for the national games. So we will start preparations for the regional games,” Maingi said.

Despite his under-19 team losing their crown to Iiani, Maingi said they will be battling for top honours at the Eastern region games set for Makueni Boys later this month.

Syumile Mixed retained their netball title following a resounding 38-14 win over Kiuuku. Syumile who are the Eastern Region champions will now shift focus to defending their regional title later this month so they qualify for the national games for a third time. In semis, Syumile whipped Barazani 39-10 while Kiuuku edged out Kisaani 32-31 in an evenly contested tie.
