East African Motor Sports Club is set to bring Motocross back to Nakuru, four decades after the last competitive championships was held in the county.

Despite the federation having a track in Solai, East Africa Motor Sports Club chairman Kennedy Chege said it is too small to host international championships and that's why they need to construct an international racing track within the western circuit in Nakuru town.

He said they have secured 10 acres around Kabarak, where they plan to develop the new track.

The existing one is at Racecourse Estate, which hosted the international championships in the 60s and 70s.

Kenya seeks to be rated among Africa’s powerhouses who include South Africa, Zambia and Uganda.

For their plans to succeed, the EAMC boss said they’ll work in partnership with Nakuru County Government.

Speaking when they paid a courtesy call on Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, who was represented by his deputy Erick Korir, Chege said;

“We want to work in partnership with you (Nakuru County Government) for us to achieve our mission. It’ll equally act as a tourist attraction to the county."

While welcoming the move, Korir said they were keen on developing sports infrastructure in the county, which has seen the county government secure a Sh1 billion loan from World Bank to develop and refurbish Afraha Stadium.

They also plan to construct a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts.

“We also want to develop different infrastructure in the county and the first phase will see Afraha Stadium elevated into international status,” he said.

Other EAMC officials present were vice chairman Mutahi Wairitu, secretary general Judy Luya, captain Rolf Kihara and Public Relations consultant Maryann Wariithi.
