Tragedy struck Muhuri Muchiri High School after one of their students drowned in the Indian Ocean.

The student was among other rugby 7s team players that left the accommodation village at Shimo La Tewa High in Mombasa for a swimming expedition along the beach when Daniel Mokua, a form four student was swept by the strong currents in the Ocean.

The school is among many schools that arrived in Mombasa for the national secondary school term one games that start on Tuesday.

Kisauni OCPD Julius Kirangu confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to establish how the students managed to sneak from the village, which is under police security. Kirangu said the school principal has been arrested to shade more light on the incident.

The incident comes days after Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Belio Kipsang, issued a stern warning on ensuring all the students were safe during the games.

Kipsang warned that teachers and officials would be held accountable in case of any malpractice as safety of all participants must be assured.
