Jose Mourinho reportedly wanted Real Madrid to raid the Premier League if he returned to the Bernabeu.

The former Manchester United boss was under consideration for a second spell in Madrid as Santiago Solari faced the axe.

Florentino Perez instead turned to another former boss in Zinedine Zidane with the Frenchman re-appointed on a deal until 2022.

It is claimed several key members of the Real board, and some players, were against Mourinho being brought back in.

Reports in Spain suggest Mourinho wanted to overhaul the Real squad during the transfer window - with four Premier League players on his wishlist.

The Portuguese had been keen on a reunion with United stopper David De Gea, who has been close to joining Real in the past, according to El Chiringuito.

De Gea is yet to sign a new deal at Old Trafford with the Spaniard demanding to be made the club's highest-paid player.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was also believed to be on his radar - as were Tottenham pair Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen remains on Real's radar with Spurs considering letting him go this summer with 12 months remaining on his current deal, if they cannot persuade him to sign an extension.

Eden Hazard is likely to be Zidane's No.1 target, having been a long-term admirer of the Belgian.

Zidane is also believed to be interested in Sadio Mane and Paul Pogba, with Perez confirming he will be given funds to add to his squad this summer.

The Frenchman will take charge of the first match of his second spell in charge against Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu this weekend.
