School games: Reprieve for schools serving ban in Coast

Coast Secondary Schools Sports Association has lifted ban on a number of schools ahead of Term One School games that gets underway later this month.

The association held its annual meeting recently and agreed to lift ban slapped on the schools last year before Term One games that start at the zonal level next week.

Association Secretary Mwadena Munga said they want to start the year afresh. “We don’t want bad blood within our member schools and, as a result, we have decided to lift ban slapped on our schools," said Munga.

However, the ban on games teachers slapped last year still remains meaning that they will not take part in any sports activities until the ban is over.

“Teachers banned could not be pardoned because we realised they were part of the wrong doing. Most schools banned fielded ineligible players.

Kwale High School's rugby sevens team, which was banned for fielding ineligible players during last year's national championships in Embu, will remain banned.

Munga said his association was handling cases within its jurisdiction at the region level. Last year, the association banned several schools where Kilifi’s St George's banned in basketball, volleyball and while Tononoka Secondary School, Shimo La Tewa and Lake Kenyatta Secondary School were banned from handball.

With the lifting of the ban, the schools are free to field teams at this year's championships which start with the zonal games from February 13-15 at various designated venues.

Basketball, hockey, handball, athletics, swimming, rugby sevens and 15s will feature in the Term One Games.
