Sagwe to head Chess in Schools programme

Chess Kenya has appointed Fred Sagwe to head the Chess in Schools (CiS) programme. 

He replaces Shem Vilembwa, who headed the committee.

Sagwe is a seasoned chess player with over 10 years experience in the game and is also a certified World Chess Federation (FIDE) trainer holding the Developmental Instructor (DI) title.

He has taught Computer Science for the last eight years. He also works as a part-time ICT Master Trainer and an ICT champion in charge of high school ICT integration in South Gucha sub county in Kisii County.

The new CiS head has been at the forefront of championioning for the inclusion of chess in the new education curriculum.

Commenting on his appointment, Sagwe promised to do his best to ensure the sport grows in schools.

“What mostly attracts me to chess stems from the fact that children love games and game-based instructions help them get concepts easily.”

“Chess also demonstrates a good use of logic and strategy - skills that are also paramount in our education system.”

“The beauty of chess as a teaching tool, is that it stimulates children’s minds and helps them build these skills while enjoying themselves. 

“As a result, they become more critical thinkers, better problem solvers and independent decision makers.”

The new head of CiS has promised to work with all stakeholders in ensuring this initiative in implemented successfully.
