Kenyan international Frank Wanyama is out to enjoy himself with the Samurai International at this weekend’s Safari Sevens at the RFUEA Grounds.

Wanyama was charged with sexual assault in April alongside his Kenya Harlequin teammate Alex Olaba but pleaded not guilty and were released on bond.

He had been included in a 31-man provisional Kenyan Sevens squad for the upcoming 2018/19 season released by Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) only for him to be dropped a few weeks ago.

The utility player will team up with the Kenyan trio of Oscar Dennis, Augustine Lugonzo and Tony Owuor as Samurai select side seek to reclaim the title they lost to hosts Shujaa 38-21 in the 2016 finals.

And as Samurai begin their campaign this morning (10am) with a Group B match against Red Wailers, before clashing with Emerging Uganda and Spain at 1pm and 4.22pm respectively, Wanyama is confident of inspiring the selected side to victory.

“I expect a good weekend with Samurai, who are definitely here to win. I was willing to play for the national team and they had even given me a call up, but I was requested to step aside for a while as I sort out my issues.

“I was training with the team ahead of the Dubai Sevens, then the officials got concerned when some bloggers started questioning my inclusion in the team  I was told that the sponsors were raising questions, a decision that I feel is unfair. I don’t know how true that is.

“So, I am just going out there to have fun, nothing else.” Wanyama went on to take a dig at the Kenya Rugby Union officials for making an unjust decision.

“To be honest, I don’t agree with the officials’ decision.

“They need to treat allegations as allegations, but not conviction. There is a big difference between the two, they should leave it to the authority to deal with it.”
