The opening ceremony of the 2018 East Africa Secondary School games lived up to its billing as guests from the region were welcomed in style for the 17th edition of the annual competition.
From Rwanda Defence Forces band to a live performance by the Ecole D’Arts et Musique de Nyundo (Nyundo School of Arts and Music) students to St Alloys Secondary and Rumagana Primary Schools’ traditional dances, the guests were left yearning for more entertainment.
It was home away from home for the Kenyans, who enjoyed different renditions of their favourite Kenyan tunes. Sauti Sol’s hit song Unconditional Bae sang by one of the arts and music students got all young and old on their feet as they sang along.
Students of St Alloys thrilled the guests with their traditional Umva ngo nolaje traditional dance. However, it was the pupils of Rumagana who stole the show with their well-choreographed bagole beza dance. The children, some as young as six years took pride in their culture showing their guests the abilities both and girls are expected to have.
Meanwhile national girls hockey champions Trans Nzoia Mixed began their campaign on a high with a 2-1 win over former East Africa winners Kerugoya Girls. Sharon Oduka was the star of the match bagging a brace to give her side maximum points. Jenifer Wangari scored Kerugoya’s consolation goal.
An elated Trans Nzoia coach Joseph Onyango praised his charges saying they needed victory in their opening match. “We need that victory because contesting for the title in a round robin format, each victory and point counts.”
He added that returning to the competition after a two-year absence and having finished second in their 2015 debut, their main objective is to win the title.
The other girls’ match pitting Ugandan sides Kakungulu Memorial and Namagunga ended in a barren draw. [By Elizabeth Mburugu]
