Not even the eyes of the Tiger and a pair of princesses could inspire Serena Williams to her seventh Wimbledon title.

The Queen of Centre Court was cheered on by her mates Tiger Woods, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

But even by royal appointment there were too many basic errors in her game and she was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Angelique Kerber.

There were flashes of Williams’ old self during the match but they were too few and far between to trouble the German.

And Kerber, who lost here in the final two years ago to Williams, fell to the ground in triumph as she avenged that defeat when the American, hoping to save the match, returned her serve straight into the net.

It was upsetting for Williams, although even getting to this stage was a remarkable effort after she almost died due to complications during the birth of her daughter 10 months ago.

Williams was broken in the first game and even though she broke back to make it 2-2 in the first set Kerber always looked in control.

And so it proved as she got her hands on the Venus Rosewater dish for the first time for her third Grand Slam triumph.

“I was really happy to get this far. It’s obviously disappointing but I have so much to look forward to and I’m literally just getting started.

“To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today and I tried but Angelique played really well.

“I look forward to just continuing to be back out here and do what I do best.

“She’s an incredible person and a really good friend so I’m really happy for here, so congrats again — it’s amazing.”

"I am just me, and that's all I can be. To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried but Kerber said: “It’s just a dream come true.

Serena, you are a great person and a champion and you are such an inspiration for everyone watching.

“You will have your next Grand Slam soon, I’m really sure.

“I knew I had to play my best tennis against a champion like Serena.”
