Champions St Joseph's Kibwezi were in a fine form as they drubbed Embu County winners Gategi 4-0 in their opening Group D match as the Eastern Region secondary schools Term One games began yesterday at Kangaru School.

Sarafina Wausi starred for St Joseph's netting twice in the fourth and 31st minutes.

Lydia Josphat and Eunice Mutindi were also on target in the 16th and 34th minutes to subject the home girls to their first defeat.

St Joseph's coach Gabriel Ndunga said his girls were not only in Embu to defend their crown but, maintain a clean sheet.

"I'm glad we got the start we all wanted. We are determined to retain our title and also hope to maintain a clean sheet throughout the championships," Ndunga said.

Mbooni Boys of Makueni also had a winning start as they dismissed Tharaka Nithi's Kiriani 41-34 in boys' basketball Group A match.

Mbooni's first quarter 10-2 lead won the match for them even as Kiriani kept improving with each period. Kiriani were rejuvenated in the second quarter even as Mbooni won 11-9 for a 21-11 advantage at half time.

The second half was a balanced affair as the two sides tied 8-8 at the end of the third quarter. Kiriani dominated the fourth winning 15-12 but it was too little too late.

Mbooni captain Bildad Omondi said their aim is to keep playing as they did.

"We are determined to play our hearts out and go as far as we can."

Meru School won 40-37 against Lukenya School in another Group A match.
