Manchester United will offer David De Gea a new contract in a bid to fend off Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are again targeting the United No.1, after a move to the Bernabeu fell through at the 11th hour two years ago.

United are desperate to keep hold of him but aware of noises from Spain that Real will get their man, reports the Manchester Evening News.

But they hope a new deal and pay rise will convince De Gea to commit himself to Jose Mourinho's Old Trafford revolution.

The 26-year-old still has two years to run on the contract he signed back in 2015 after an administrative error cost him a move to Real.

United could also activate the option to extend by a further year.

But they will not want their Player of the Year for three straight seasons to agitate for a return to his homeland.

They could do that by making him among the highest-paid players at Old Trafford on around £200,000-a-week.

United have long-maintained they would demand a world-record for a keeper if he is to leave - exceeding the £32.6m Juventus paid for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

But they know they would have to spend a similar amount to replace him with the highest quality.

United have been linked with AC Milan’s 18-year-old keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma - but he has been valued in the region of £100m.
