Real Madrid midfielder risks serving jail term following tax case

Croatian and Real Madrid midfield dynamo Luka Modric has been caught up in a tax case which could make him pay huge sums of money in fines or serve a jail term.

Media reports from the Spanish capital Madrid revealed on Thursday morning that Modric and his wife Vanja are being investigated by the Spanish prosecutors, after failing to pay their taxes in 2013 and 2014.

Espana indicated that the Croatian international evaded tax compliance shortly after he signed for the Spanish giants in the summer transfer window of 2012. He and his wife are reported to be owing Spanish government over 800,000 Euros of unpaid taxes.

This incident comes after Modric’s teammate and Brazilian defender Marcelo was also found guilty to have committed similar offence. Marcelo had to pay close 500,000 Euros as the dues that he owed the Spanish government.

The 32 year old defensive midfielder now joins the ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ricardo Cavalho, Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Fabio Coentrao as foreign players who have been investigated on tax evasion cases.  The Croat was signed from Tottenham Hostpurs and has helped the Madrid giants to lift La Liga title twice as well as winning Uefa Champions League three times.
