Former Uganda Cranes and Gor Mahia star Timothy Ayieko passs on

Former Uganda Cranes and Gor Mahia midfielder Timothy Ayieko has died.

Ayieko passed on in Jinja, Uganda at the weekend. Kenyan legend Allan Thigo, who played with Ayieko, was among those who sent condolences to the family of former Ugandan footballer.

Thigo, who is to be inducted in Kenya Football Hall of Fame in December, described the late midfielder as a determined and friendly person who will be missed by many. “He served Gor Mahia with dedication and honour,” Thigo said.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of Cecafa, was a close friend of Ayieko and he described him as a brother and a friend.

“Ayieko was one of the most disciplined, strong and exciting midfielders who thrilled crowds in East and Central Africa,” Musonye said. Until his demise, Ayieko worked with Kakira Sugar as a sports officer. The midfield star, born in Kenya and raised in Uganda, was one of the most celebrated Ugandan players in the 70’s and 80’s when Uganda Cranes reached the finals of Afcon in 1978 in Ghana.
