Scrabble: Mwangi wins Division A scrabble tournament

Nakuru’s Willy Mwangi won the Division A of Kisumu National Scrabble tournament in the Maths and English Word Mastery and mind games contest that was staged at the Royal City, Nyamasaria, over the weekend.

The Fourth seed in team Kenya to East Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) championship, registered a total of 15 wins, plus 736 spread and losing three of the 18 outings.

The Kisumu national qualifier championship that served as a qualifier for the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) that will be held in the country next month and also the fourth qualifier to ECASA that will be held in Lusaka, Zambia next year over Easter.

This will be the first time that Kenya holds a World (WESPAC) event at The Laico Regency in Nairobi from November 6-12, which will bring together over 50 countries.

Allan Oyende returned second after posting 12 wins and a spread of plus 1357, he lost six of the outings.

Oyende beat third placed Joash Manyala with a spread of 1018. Manyala also won 12 rounds, and lost six, with a spread of plus 339.

In Division B, Mukhalasie Metric beat overnight leader George Nyakundi, also the Scrabble Kenya Secretary General (SG), whom he dispatched to the third position.

Metric of KCB won the Division B championship after posting 14 wins and a spread of 1122, losing four of the outings of the 18 rounds that he played.

Second overall was Joshua Ogolla, who beat SG Nyakundi by 140 spread points after he won 13 games and a spread of 1,299. Nyakundi also returned with 13 wins and 1,159 spread, losing five matches. [Phillip Orwa]
