Champions Sinyolo are one match away from retaining their Brookside East Africa Secondary School girls' hockey title following their win against St Joseph's Kitale.

The four-time regional champions yesterday defeated St Joseph's 1-0 to enhance their chances of defending their title. Should they complete that feat, they would have won the title for the fourth successive time.

They are top on the log with 10 points, three more than second-placed St Joseph's, from four rounds of matches. Maurine Owiti scored Sinyolo's all-important goal in the 34th minute to give her side an edge ahead of the crucial stage.

They will take on perennial rivals Old Kampala in their last round-robin match in hunt for a win or at worst, a draw of any kind.

Sinyolo coach Alloise Owino said they will be seeking to end the championships on a high.

"We will definitely be going for victory for us to retain the title. We had a slow start but picked up and we are determined to end well," Owino said.

In girls' volleyball, Kenya's Soweto Academy came from one set down to beat Namugongo of Uganda 3-1.
