Top guns in league action: Gor, AFC and Sofapaka continue chase for glory

Ulinzi Stars also keen to stop new boys Nzoia at Afraha today.

Top title contenders Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Tusker, Ulinzi and Sofapaka will all be in action as the Kenyan Premier League continues after a two-week break.

Action resumed yesterday with Sony Sugar hosting Bandari in Awendo as teams continued the battle for supremacy in the league after GOtv action last weekend.

New Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr will be in-charge of his first competitive match tomorrow against Nakumatt at Nyayo Stadium.

The Briton was brought on board after Jose Marcelo quit. Kerr oversaw the team’s 2-1 loss against Everton two weeks ago, a result that must have given him an idea of what to expect in his first match.

A delighted Kerr says he was impressed by Gor Mahia’s showing against Everton and believes this can inspire them to win the league this season.

“It was a big occasion for Kenyan football and my team made a good impression of it. We have to show the same competitiveness in every match in our quest to win the league,” he said.

While Kerr will be having a first taste of league action, his AFC counterpart Robert Matano will be hoping to register his second win in a row for Ingwe in the league as he faces Western Stima today at Nyayo Stadium from 4.15pm.

Matano took charge of his first league game for AFC in Mombasa two weeks ago and it was a winning start as AFC beat Bandari 1-0.

Leopards go into the match in high spirits after a midweek win over Bidco in a rescheduled GOtv round of 16 match on Wednesday.

Ssimbwa eyes win

However, before the 4.15pm kick-off at Nyayo, Sofapaka coach Sam Ssimbwa (pictured) will be hoping his side will return to winning ways when they host Muhoroni Youth from 2pm.

The Ugandan has been unhappy with the form of his team of late and the loss to Kariobangi Sharks in a GOtv encounter last Sunday did not make things any better for Batoto ba Mungu.

Muhoroni will be no pushovers, however, and Ssimbwa and his charges will have to quickly find the form that saw them beat former champions Gor Mahia in Kinoru Stadium.

On their part, Ulinzi Stars will be keen to defend their top place in the league when they host Nzoia today.
