Champions Kaya Tiwi and Moi Girls Kamusinga began their national title defence with victories as this year’s secondary schools Term Two A games got underway yesterday at Shanzu Teachers Training College, Mombasa.

The reigning national champions were forced to sweat for victory and were at times forced to rally from behind in the tightly contested match. In girls handball, Kamusinga of Western Region squeezed a narrow 30-28 win against an unrelenting Utithi of Eastern in Group A.

Kamusinga Coach Godfrey Simiyu was delighted with the win, but said that his charges need to work harder in their next matches.

“I must laud our opponents. They gave us a tough test. It was our first match, but we need to up our game and show improvement ahead of our next task,” Simiyu said.

While Kamusinga had a demanding day in office, national netball champions, Kaya Tiwi, had it easy routing Moi Girls Mandera of North Eastern 130-1.

Former netball champions Obambo of Nyanza handed newcomers St Dorcus of Nairobi a rude welcome to the national scene with a 48-14 beating.

Kaya Tiwi and Obambo will renew rivalry today in their second Group A matches.

In another girls handball tie, Rift Valley’s St Francis Cheptarit made work easy of Wajir Girls of Northern, securing a 52-0 win.

Marion Jeptoo top scored for Chaptarit with 14 goals, while Aurelia Jebet had 12, Daisy Kiplagat(11) and Nancy Jepchumba (10).

In the boys handball contest, St Ignatius Mukumu of Western launched their title quest with a 31-14 win over Barani of Coast.
