Kenyan players dominate Mombasa Open tournament

Kenyan men were the toast of this year's Mombasa Open badminton tournament that concluded on Sunday at Oshwal Academy, Mombasa.

In the women category, neighbours Uganda claimed honours in the championships.

However in the junior matches, hosts Kenya called the shots with much pride.

In men singles, it was an all-Kenyan affair as John Wanyoike dismissed Abraham Wagute 2-0 in the final. The Kenyans overcame Ugandans in their respective semifinals.

In men doubles, Kenya’s pair of Wagute and Patrick Kinyua edged out compatriots Sammy Sikoyo and Edwin Akwanyi in the final.

Meanwhile, it was an Ugandan affair in the ladies' doubles as Aisha Nakiyemba and Apiyo Betty floored compatriots Jovia Komuhenda and Gladys Mbabazi in a tough final.

In mixed doubles, it was yet another Ugandan affair after Freddie Kirabo teamed up with Jovia Komuhenda to silence Israel Wanagalya and Apiyo Betty in the final.

In boys' Under-19, Israel Davis of Uganda beat Kenya’s Hannan Asif 2-0 in the final.

In boys' Under-19 doubles, Amilio Merali and Ali Asger defeated Hannan Asif and Shivam in an all-Kenyan final affair.

In boys' Under-12, Uganda’s Abed Bukenye beat Kenya’s Rayan Maim 2-0 in the final. In girls' Under-15, Kushi Tyagi beat Maheera Khatau in yet another Kenyan final affair.

Kenyan girls dominated the Under-12 category after Medha Thingrani defeated Amreen Somji in the final.
