Zetech beat USIU to maintain unbeaten run since 2015

Zetech march on at Nyayo

Newly promoted side Zetech University Sparks beat former champions United States International University (USIU) Flames 51-44 in a Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League match at Nyayo Stadium at the weekend.

The win saw Sparks extend their unbeaten run since 2015 -  when they won the Division One League without losing a match. Such has been the zeal that has seen the newcomers beam with pride, now that they are playing in the top league.

Former men’s champions Ulinzi Warriors extended their unbeaten run after they bagged their second successive win.

Ulinzi, who defeated USIU with a 30-point range two weeks ago, beat Carey Odhiambo’s Co-operative Bank 83-71 to maintain a respectable spot in the men’s Premier League standings.

Ulinzi head coach William Balozi said he went back to the drawing board to rectify mistakes that hindered them from successfully defending the league trophy last season.

“We have been doing a lot of training at our base in Eastleigh. We are focused on leaving a mark in the league this year. We are glad the fruits are already showing following victories from the opening two games,” Balozi said.

Despite the competitiveness of the league, Balozi has not done any major recruitment this season. He has signed little-known charges from clubs in Mombasa.

“My only signing this year was Collins Wande from Congo United in Mombasa and another promising young man called Hussein from Baobab in Mombasa.

“I did not have any intention of breaking the bank for any major signing in the league.

“I think it is good to give promising talents a chance as well,” Balozi said.

Equally, Balozi has lost the services of former KBF Most Valuable Player Victor Odendo, who has ditched Ulinzi, for defending champions Kenya Ports Authority.

Odendo has been with Ulinzi for over 10 years. [Erick Ochieng’]
