After Akamba Bus Company collapsed after over 50 years of dominance, players in the public transport community are stepping back to reflect on its meaning.
Players in the sector say a lot of factors led to the demise of the public transporter with humble beginning in Machakos. Reasons for the fall range from poor management, board room wrangles, family disputes, fuel prices and recession.
The Managing Director of EasyCoach, Azym Dossa, says odds are always tipped against transporters, adding it is important for public transport enterprises to learn to stick to targets, drive agenda-based goals on their competencies, and enhance ability to read the mood of customers.
“Akamba was perhaps unable to reckon with inherent challenges vis-a-vis the poor road infrastructure that precipitated vehicle breakdowns, tyre and spare parts usage. High fuel costs did not help matters,” he said.
Dossa said EasyCoach, which has a fleet of luxury coaches, Shuttle Buses, and Bus Services in Kenya and expanding in the region, has learnt to stick to its targets.
“Customer demand-oriented and improving customer satisfaction and loyalty management concept is becoming the mainstream, and customers become the deciding factor for the survival and development of enterprises,” he added.
