Defending champions Koyonzo Secondary School are through to the quarterfinals of the Western region Secondary School games currently going on in Kakamega.

The Kakamega County rugby sevens champions saw off Bungoma High 21-7, Ebusiloli 50-0 and Nyangori 33-0 to sail through to the last eight easily.

Koyonzo who are also the national rugby sevens champions are targeting the East African title and their coach Elly Okwemba said they are warming up on their way to the top.

“We are going to defend our title. That is a fact because my boys are playing better than they ddi last year when they went all the way to win the nationals for the first time.

“It wont be easy however because a lot of work needs to be done in the field but I trust in my boys to deliver. This is Koyonzo and we are champions,” said Okwemba.

St Peter’s Mumias meanwhile were knocked out after losing to Vihiga 19-10 and Senende 12-10. Their only win came against Nambale whom they hammered 24-0.

Bungoma High qualifiued despite their opening defeat to Koyonzo. They thumped Ebusiloli 47-7 and edged out Nyangori 31-0.

In the quarters, Koyonzo will face off against Kolanya Boys.

Other quarterfinals will see Kimobo play Senende, Butula entertain Bungoma and Vihiga play Mukumu Boys.
