One killed, several injured after mushroom boiler explodes in Mai Mahiu

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

One person was killed and scores injured on Monday morning after a boiler exploded at a mushroom farm in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha, in Nakuru County.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion that left three workers nursing serious burns. They have been admitted to Kijabe Mission Hospital. Several others were treated and discharged.

Reports indicated that the boiler, which is used to supply steam to the farm, developed mechanical problems before it blew up.

A worker, who did not wish to be named, said he heard a loud bang as the boiler blew up, splashing hot water on them and destroying walls.

“The morning accident caused panic, forcing the workers to flee. Some were injured following the melee,” the worker said.

Naivasha police commander Samuel Waweru said the victim died on the spot while the other three workers are in critical but stable condition at the hospital.

Meanwhile, residents of Moi Ndabi in Naivasha are trying to come to terms with an incident where a 25-year-old man was found dangling from a rope inside his parents’ compound.

The body of Paul Njoroge was found by a relative before officers from Kongoni Police Station moved in to collect it.

Police said they suspected that the man committed suicide and that the motive was not clear.

"His Kazi Mtaani colleagues said they had seen him the previous evening at a local hotel and he looked okay. No one knows why he took his life," said Waweru.

Njoroge's body was taken to Naivasha hospital mortuary.
