Governor Chepkwony names his nominee for Deputy Governor

Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony has nominated Lilly Chepngetich Ngok, the County Executive for Education, Sports and Social Services, as deputy governor to replace Susan Kikwai who died on March 20.

In a letter dated March 25 to the Speaker of the Country Assembly Dominic Rono, Governor Chepkwony said he had taken into account the fact that Kikwai hailed from Kipkelion East sub-county and the nomination of Ms Ngok (pictured) was meant to ensure “continuity” in the elective seats and gender balance in his administration.

“I can confirm that the nominee meets all requirements for nomination to the seat and has all qualifications, leadership qualities, and competence necessary for such a demanding job,” he said.

Mr Rono said the county assembly was going to expedite the nominee’s vetting and approval process.

On Tuesday, Leader of Majority of Kericho County Assembly Hezron Kipngeno caused a stir when he said it was the wish of majority of members that late Kikwai be replaced by someone from Kipkelion East constituency where she hailed from.

“We are requesting the governor that when the time comes to fill the gap left behind by the demise of Susan Kikwai, the replacement should come from the larger Kipkelion constituency because she held the position on behalf of area residents,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Kipkelion East MP Joseph Limo, who said he was among leaders who supported Kikwai’s choice as Deputy Governor during the 2013 General Election.

Ben Siele, a local political commentator, said the larger Kipkelion, comprising East and West constituencies, were key for any leader who wants to succeed in politics of Kericho County.

“The two constituencies control almost 100,000 votes, thus playing a major role in the management of the county’s political affairs. The area can make or break a governor. The next deputy governor must come from that area,” Siele said.

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot support the nomination of another woman to replace Kikwai as Deputy Governor.
