Mix-up at morgue leaves family with wrong body

A family in Naivasha has been forced to postpone the burial of their kin after his body went missing from the mortuary.

The family of the late Gideon Ndung’u had gathered at Jamani Mortuary, a private morgue in Naivasha town, to collect his body for burial, only to be told that it had been picked by the wrong family and interred in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.

Ndung’u's mother Grace Waithaka told of their shock when the mortuary attendants presented to them an older man's body instead. Ndung'u was 56 years old.

She said her son died from chest complications while undergoing treatment at Naivasha sub-County Hospital.

“The body was taken to the mortuary but we were shocked when we went to collect it only to learn that it had been collected the previous day and buried,” Waithaka said.

“We have been forced to go to court to get an order so that we can travel to Kinangop and exhume the body of our kin as the other family collects theirs from the mortuary.”

Last month, a group of mourners were left in shock after arriving at a Gilgil mortuary to find the body of their father missing.
