Pedestrian killed by speeding Matatu in Bomet

A pedestrian died over the weekend after he was hit by a speeding Matatu near Bomet town.

According to witnesses, the pedestrian tried to cross the road when the speeding Matatu hit him, killing him on the spot.

Witnesses who spoke to The Standard at the scene of the accident said the 40-year-old misjudged the speed of the matatu and chose to cross the road, when he was hit.

“The area is a black spot due to the slopy nature of the road. Motorist always speed and accidents are very frequent,” said John Rono.

Disaster Management officer Stanley Mutai said their attempts to save the life of the pedestrian were futile due to the impact of the accident.

“The Matatu hit him and run over him injuring him badly. We could do nothing to save his life,” Mutai said.

Residents living near the scene said there was need for bumps to be erected in the area.

“We are in danger of being hit by speeding vehicles and the only way to avert such accidents, the government should erect bumps in the area,” said Elizabet Ruto a resident.

Threatening to take it upon themselves, they gave the government a week to erect bumps warning that if their calls go unanswered, they will erect artificial bumps in the area.

“We do not want to see more people being killed and nothing is done,” added Ms Ruto.

The body of the victim was taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital.
