School girl delivers, dumps baby in latrine

Residents of Ang’ang’eet Village in Ndaraweta Ward, Bomet County, are reeling in shock after a form two student gave birth and dumped her baby in a pit latrine.

A neighbour stumbled on the baby at the pit latrine and raised alarm.

The girl who was known to her neighbours to be pregnant was traced and found nursing injuries and did not have her baby.

After being probed, she revealed she gave birth and decided to dump it at the neighbours toilet.

Confirming the incident, Ngainet Sub Location assistant chief Racho Too said the girl was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Too said the child was retrieved immediately but could not make it to hospital alive.

“Unfortunately the child died on way to hospital but the mother is out of danger despite losing a lot of blood,” the administrator said.

She said police have taken up the matter and were hunting a woman alleged to have assisted the girl in giving birth.

“We suspect that the girl was assisted to give birth and also in throwing away the child. A man hunt for a woman is on so she can be charged,” the assistant chief added.

Locals who spoke to the Standard said it was absurd that the girl resorted to throwing away the baby.

“It is a taboo to throw away a child after birth. The girl had carried it for nine month and despite claiming she was not in a position to raise it that was very wrong,” said Joel Rono a neighbour.

They want stern action against the student to act as a warning to other girls.

The assistant chief caution school going girls to shun illicit relationship to avoid such incidents.
