Baringo to get pencil donation worth Sh58 million

Baringo schools will benefit from two tonnes of pencils worth Sh58.5 million donated by UK’s Rotary club of Workington and Cumberland Pencil Company.

The pencils presented to Baringo, through the Kalenjin Kootab Myoot Community in London, will benefit over 30,000 students in the county.

While receiving the pencils in London on behalf of Baringo County, Kalenjin Kootab Myoot Community chairman Kipnyango Seroney said the pencils would be shipped to Kenya immediately.

Mr Seroney praised Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi for agreeing to ship the pencils, and noted that the shipment would take four weeks to arrive in Kenya.

“The governor saw the importance of the pencils for the children of Baringo,” he said. “Our role here is to support charity work and we are very pleased to create such links,” he added.

The 300,000 pencils were flagged off by the club president Patricia Hoggarth and Ken Kirkwood, the International Services director, at the Workington warehouse in London. The ceremony was witnessed by Seroney.

“We are pleased to donate these pencils to Seroney to take them to schools in Baringo County. They are good pencils and children will enjoy using them,” said Hoggarth.

Mr Kirkwood said they have sent out six million pencils to over 46 countries, and they were pleased that these pencils were now going to Kenya.

“We shall continue to work with Mr Seroney in various other projects we undertake in our international programmes to ensure that several other counties benefit from the project,” said Mr Kirkwood.
