Commissioner warns drunken chiefs of job loss

Elgeyo/Marakwet, Kenya: Elgeyo/Marakwet will soon investigate cases of drug abuse involving civil servants in a move aimed at stemming out the vice, County Commissioner Arthur Osiya has said.

Mr Osiya said his office would liaise with the probation department and Faith Based Organizations and officers found as drug addicts would be taken to rehabilitation centres but those with extreme cases would be sacked.

The administrator regretted that rampant substance abuse especially alcohol consumption among departmental heads and their staff in the region has hampered prompt service delivery.

“You cannot have your cake and eat it,” warned the county commissioner.

He added: “When you agreed to be a civil servant, there is a specific code of conduct that must be followed and some officers no longer adhere to it.”

Osiya pointed out the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government as the worst hit department where several chiefs and their assistants have been adversely affected by alcohol consumption.
