Nakuru, Kenya: Nakuru GK Prison inmates got a rare opportunity yesterday to interact with their family members and friends. The event was the first one of its kind at the facility.
Christmas and New Year festivities came late for the prisoners and some could not hide their joy after meeting their relatives and friends.
“I have been here for the last five years and this has never happened before. I feel great after meeting my family,” said Maina Mwangi, an inmate.
Mwangi, who is about to complete his five-year sentence, lauded the prison management for organising the event.
His wife Grace Njoki said the family was grateful after being accorded the chance to see him.
“Prison has really reformed him. Some of his friends in the village who he left behind have died after engaging in various ills,” she said.
The Deputy officer-in-charge of the facility, George Diang’a, said the event was aimed at allowing close interaction between the prisoners and their families.
He said due to restrictions imposed on prisoners, the event enabled the inmates to bond with their families.
Some of the prisoners urged the Government to expedite reforms in the judiciary and prison department to comply with the Constitution.
“The Government should avail legal representation for all suspects and prisoners appealing against their sentences as envisaged in the Constitution,” said Michael Macharia, a prisoner.
