Police net over 200 litres of illicit brew and bhang in Naivasha

Naivasha, Kenya: Ongoing operation against sale and consumption of illicit brews gained momentum in Naivasha with police confiscating over 200 litres of illicit brew and bhang in various estates.

This came as former area MP John Mututho announced plans to construct three rehabilitation centers in the country to deal with alcoholics.

During raids conducted in Naivasha town and its suburbs, over twenty suspects majority of them youths, were arrested consuming chang’aa and busaa.

Drama unfolded during the raid in Kihoto when police found some of the suspects too intoxicated to even escape.

The suspects who included several women were bundled into a waiting car and driven to Naivasha Police Station.

According to Naivasha DC Mohamed Abass, over 200 litres of different illegal brews were nabbed during the crackdown.

Abass said that the operation would go on until the area was free of the illicit brews which have been a source of concern.

“Our officers are on the ground going on with the operation and we shall not rest until we have dealt with the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile former Mututho has welcomed the presidential directive on the fight against illicit brew.

Mututho admitted that the drinks had taken toll on the youths mainly in Central Kenya where majority.

“I commend the presidential directive on the illicit brews and it’s sad that government officers have to wait for the president to speak so as to take action,” he said.

Mututho said that plans were underway to construct three rehabilitation centers in the country to deal with those already affected.

He said that he had already identified donors for the projects which will be based in Nairobi, Njoro and Murang’a.

“We are perturbed by the high number of youth involved in the consumption of illicit brews and we shall make sure that those affected are assisted,” he said.
