Rights group rejects Narok Cabinet nominees

A human rights organisation wants Narok County Governor Samuel Kuntai to reconstitute his Cabinet over claims it does not meet constitutional requirements.

The organisation claims minority and interest groups and the disabled, were left out in the nominations. They also allege the composition does not reflect the face of the county.

“The team is composed of the Governor’s political supporters and relatives. It has no face of the county because some ethnic groups were also left out,” claimed Mr Elijah Sikona, chairman of Trust Society of Human Rights Alliance.

They threatened to go to court if the Governor fails to reconstitute the cabinet. They also want Mr Kuntai to release names of the vetting committee and make the process public.

“The vetting process should be public and transparent,” said Sikona accompanied by Mr Paul Maina, the organisation Coordinator and George Narok, a human rights activist at a press conference.

Kuntai appointed Ezekiel Rono (Education), John Marindany (Health), Richard Birir (Agriculture), Lenah Munke (Finance), George Meshuko (Public Service), Allan Tuala (Trade), Nelson Keshei (Roads), Morgan Siloma (Lands) and Seenoi Nkokuwa (Community and Higher Learning).

The organisation has also moved to court to, claiming the Governor was not fit to serve because he has alleged interest in a company that collects revenue at Masai Mara Game Reserve. It wants the contract the defunct Transmara County Council entered into with the Mara Conservancy, a company the Governor is said to be a director, nullified and demanded an audit of the revenue the company has collected since 2001.
