Cecafa Cup winners to get Sh2.4m

The winners of this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup which will kicks off on November 27, will pocket Sh2.4m, up from Sh1.6m.

The second and third placed teams will take home Sh1.6m and Sh801,000 respectively. The event will end on December 12.


Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye (pictured) said the title sponsors Serengeti Breweries have increased the prize money of Africa’s oldest football competion.

"Our sponsors have played a crucial role to present a competitive tournament, We are following suit by awarding handsomely," Musonye said in an email.

Tanzania’s cities Dar es Salaam and Mwanza will share the games where the brewers have provided $450,000 (Sh36m) in sponsorship.

Uganda are drawn in Group C alongside Kenya, three-time winners Malawi and Ethiopia, who have won four times.

Kenya lost to Uganda in the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2009 and in the final in 2008 in the regional tournament.

Group A has hosts Tanzania, guests Zambia, Burundi, and Somalia whereas Rwanda, African giant Ivory Coast, Sudan and Zanzibar were drawn in Group B, dubbed the pool of death.

The tournament starts with Group A matches — Burundi versus Somalia, followed by Tanzania versus Zambia. Sudan vs Zanzibar and Rwanda vs Ivory Coast Group B matches will follow. Kenya play on the third day against Malawi, after Ethiopia versus Uganda match.
