League title: Status quo remains

By Gilbert Wandera

Ulinzi failed to make sure of their league title ambitions as Gor stumbled in their bid to eat up ground on the leaders.

In the end, the league title race is still open and the status quo remains after 26 rounds of matches.

Thousands of Gor fans invaded Naivasha on Saturday to give the team moral support against Karuturi Sports, but it was not enough to get them the three vital points.

But, coach Zedekiah Otieno is still confident they can achieve their dream of winning the title with four matches to go and is not giving up just yet.

He told journalists in Naivasha: "There are still four matches to go and we can win and Ulinzi lose. So anything can happen. We are not giving up yet."

Otieno must have let out a sigh of relief on Sunday after Ulinzi failed to go past Tusker for it would have opened a nine point lead that would have been impossible for Gor to catch up.

Ironically, a handful of Gor fans were at City Stadium to support Tusker even though the brewers would have overtaken their team had they stopped the soldiers going to second spot on the standings.

Exciting league

With four weeks remaining before the league concludes, Gor fans have once again shown that they are willing to do whatever it takes to push their team to the title.

They proved it on Saturday coming out in large numbers to cheer the team in Naivasha. Their presence on the pitch has made the Kenyan Premier League very exciting and a must watch every weekend.

At the bottom of the standings, there was no respite for Mahakama, who failed to go past Western Stima following a barren draw at City Stadium on Saturday and remain rooted at the bottom of the standings.

Only a miracle will save the Justice Boys from an imminent relegation as they battle in the remaining four matches.

Mahakama are not alone. Also threatened with the big axe are, Red Berets, Posta Rangers, KCB and Nairobi City Stars.

So, as teams battle it out for the title, there will also be another, probably, even more fierce fight to remain in the league.

Posta have in the meantime appointed Michael Nam to take charge of the team.

He will replace Peter Ambetsa, who was fired three weeks ago for non-performance and registered his first win for the team who beat Red Berets 2-1 on Saturday at Afraha Stadium.
